Egypt and Cape Verde join the historic list… and Senegal equals Morocco

Egypt and Cape Verde joined African history at the World Cup by qualifying for the second round of the current competition for the first time in history this Saturday morning.

The Egyptian national team managed to break its place in the fourth participation after 1934, 1990 and 2018 and reserved its place in the second round for the first time.

Egypt finished second in Group 7 with 5 points after a valuable draw with Iran (1-1), while Belgium topped the group only on goal difference.

For their part, Cape Verde advanced to the second round for the first time in history, finishing second in Group H with 3 points from 3 draws, 7 points behind leaders Spain.

Cape Verde and Egypt have become the 9th and 10th African teams, respectively, to qualify for the second round of the World Cup in history.

The two teams were preceded by 8 other teams: Nigeria, Morocco, Senegal, Ghana, Cameroon, Algeria, South Africa and Cote d’Ivoire.

South Africa and Cote d’Ivoire also qualified for the first time in the current tournament a few days ago.

The second round of the ongoing World Cup will feature six African teams for the first time in history: Morocco, South Africa, Cape Verde, Egypt, Senegal and Ghana, and Algeria may join them tomorrow, Sunday.

In the same context, the national teams of Senegal and Ghana managed to win their third ever qualification for the current tournament, equaling the African record for the number of qualifying times held by Morocco and Nigeria.

The classification of the African teams according to the qualification rounds was as follows: Nigeria (3 times), Morocco (3 times), Senegal (3 times), Ghana (3 times), Cameroon (1 time), Algeria (1 time), South Africa (1 time), Cote d’Ivoire (1 time), Cape Verde (1 time), and Egypt (1 time).
