Sri Lanka kept alive their slim hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the Women’s T20 World Cup for the first time after a dramatic last-over victory over Scotland at Old Trafford.
Chasing a target of 152 runs, Sri Lanka won by three wickets off the last ball.
Scotland medium pacer Rachel Slater bowled the last over, trying to prevent Sri Lanka from scoring seven runs.
He conceded singles in the first three deliveries, then fell to the ground with a knee injury.
Slater eventually left the field in tears, Priyanaz Chatterjee stepped up, conceded a single but then gave the winning boundary to Telender Sugandika Kumari.
Sri Lanka needed their best-ever third World Cup victory by a big margin in 10.3 overs, but their net run rate has barely improved over the distance and the West Indies can beat winless Ireland on Saturday to reach their group’s second and final semi-final.
Scotland, in their second T20 World Cup, sought fourth place and a direct place in the 2028 T20 World Cup in Pakistan.
But only Sarah Bryce, her sister and captain Catherine, after falling to 66-2 in the 10th over, made the Sri Lankans sweat with an unbeaten 47 off 33 balls and a last-ball boundary for a total of 151-6.
Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapathu, making his 10th World T20 appearance, exploded for 33 off 16 balls but his team slowed and crawled over the finishing line at 154-7 after his dismissal at 57-2 in the sixth over.
Sri Lanka, who moved up to third with their third win of the tournament, need the West Indies to beat Ireland and New Zealand to lose to England on Saturday to advance from Group 2 on net run rate.
