Tony opens his crisis file with Tuchel
Saudi Al-Ahly’s professional England striker Ivan Toni has revealed the scenes of “clearing the air” that brought him together with England manager Thomas Tuchel, insisting their previous spat was nothing more than a “misunderstanding” caused by a lack of understanding of each other’s personalities. This is ahead of the Three Lions’ upcoming clash against Panama At the end of the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Toni’s World Cup dreams had logically evaporated after he featured in the national team camp last June for just two minutes before being ruled out completely by Tuchel, only to return and surprise everyone by being called up to the final World Cup squad.
The German coach had previously expressed his disappointment with Toni’s “level of commitment”, but he took the initiative to contact the Al Ahly striker ahead of the tournament to clarify matters. Tony commented on this, according to the website.ESPN:“The situation required no apology from either side. The thing was, Tuchel didn’t know me as a person. “We had a deep conversation to understand each other’s mindset and now he’s starting to see the real me and hopefully he’s happy that I’m here.”
Tuchel had described Toni’s role in the current squad as an element of the “special operations team” where he is expected to make changes in the final minutes of the game rather than kick-off, which the media interpreted as the 30-year-old’s call-up was specifically for penalty kicks. “I’d like to think I offer more to the team than just taking penalties, but if my role is to take a penalty for a minute, I’ll never give it up. I’m here to serve the group.”
Toni refused to say whether he would pull off his famous “despite the goal” strike that dazzled everyone against Switzerland at Euro 2024, only laughingly saying: “I cannot share this secret now.”
Although Tuchel has yet to capitalize on Toni’s efforts, Even when England were chasing a goal in Ghana’s last game Which ended in a goalless draw in Boston, but the forward seems to accept his place in the forward pecking order, explaining: “The coach spoke to me from the beginning and defined my role very clearly, and this is much better than going into the tournament without knowing where you stand. When the coach tells you: non-negotiable.”
