The 48-team FIFA World Cup is nearing the end of its group stages and is moving into the final stage, starting on Sunday.
Only 32 teams will advance to the next round of the famous football tournament. The 2026 iteration in North America will be the first time that 48 teams will be featured, and some of the previous starters have left their mark.
Here’s what you need to know about cycle 32:

The top two teams in each of the 12 groups, along with the eight best third-place finishers, advance to the knockout stages.
The knockout phase begins with the round of 32, which was introduced at the World Cup following the expansion of the competition from 32 to 48 groups.
Then comes the round of 16, followed by the quarterfinals, semifinals and playoff for third place. The finals are on July 19.
