Spanish winger Jeremy Pino could miss the rest of the World Cup with a suspected broken collarbone.
Pino suffered the injury late in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Uruguay after falling awkwardly on his left shoulder after a challenge.
Despite appearing to be in considerable pain, the Crystal Palace player completed the match as Spain had already made all their authorized substitutions.
Head coach Luis de la Fuente, who brought on Pino in the 66th minute, admitted the initial diagnosis was worrying.
“It looks like Jeremy may have broken his collarbone,” he said.
“Tomorrow they are going to do some tests and we will see how far the injury is.
“The guy is suffering a lot and the effort he’s put in is fantastic, maybe holding on until the end of the match with a broken collarbone… It’s heroic and I’m very grateful, as are all his team-mates.”
A broken collarbone will almost certainly rule Pino out for the remainder of the tournament as the knockout stages begin.
Spain top Group H with seven points, setting up a last-32 tie against Austria or Algeria next Thursday in Los Angeles.
