Tornaida leaves the match
Saudi Arabia coach Georgios Donis of Greece has made the decision to replace Greens captain Salem Al-Dosari against Cape Verde, the first step for the player on the team’s journey to the 2026 World Cup.
In the third and final round of the group stage, the Saudi Arabian national team is playing a crucial showdown with Cape Verde, seeking to win and keep their hopes of qualifying for the round of 32 alive, settling for one point from the first two rounds.

Salem Al-Dossari was heavily criticized after the Uruguay and Spain games for a dip in technical and physical levels, while Donis was similarly criticized for sticking to a player and not replacing him despite being far from his usual level.
After 66 minutes of the clash with Cape Verde, the Greek coach decided to withdraw the national team captain after his continued lackluster performance and instead brought on Mohamed Abou Al-Shamati in an attempt to activate the attacking side in the remaining minutes.
Donis’ decision raises the clear question of whether the coach finally responded to the criticism he faced in the previous two matches, after he stuck with Salem Al-Dosari despite his drop in form, or whether the substitution was made only in response to the flow of the game and the team’s different attacking solutions at a crucial moment of the game.
