What did the Madrid star do?
Kylian Mbappe caused widespread controversy during the France-Norway 2026 World Cup match when he came on as a second-half substitute for England referee Michael Oliver in an unusual sight on football pitches.
Spanish outlet AS said Mbappe’s action was in line with the new regulation, which requires a player to leave the pitch within 10 seconds to avoid a yellow card, as the French forward was penalized for late arrivals, which would have forced his country to play with 10 men for a minute, so he quickly handed the badge to the referee.

The incident sparked a flurry of comments from fans and analysts, some of whom believed that applying the rule in this way was a “strict interpretation of the regulation”, stressing that it follows the custom for the captain to hand the badge directly to a teammate, without a third party, “and certainly not a referee”.
Despite the controversy, France continued their brilliance in the tournament as they progressed to the round of 32, topping Group A after a 4-1 win over Norway, in a game where Ousmane Dembele scored a hat-trick and Mbappe scored twice as Norway pipped their French counterparts to the next round in second place.
