This week’s Diamond League meeting in Paris will go ahead as planned heatwave history hold the country and extend the emergency services, the organizers said.

Hours after police officials in Paris said they wanted the event cancelled, the French Athletics Federation (FFA) confirmed on Friday that it would take place on Sunday at the Charlety Stadium, in cooperation with the police.

In light of the extraordinary heat that has affected Paris since June 21, the police asked the organizers of the rally, and other events planned for this week, including a music festival and a Pride march, to cancel it.

The district has said it will be forced to comply with the law if it does not agree voluntarily, because emergency aid is needed to protect the most vulnerable people.

Noah Lyles, Femke Bol and Mondo Duplantis are among the athletes expected to compete in Paris.

The FFA, which organizes the event, said it would be held in “modified format to ensure the safety of all participants”.

“Since the beginning of this difficult season, the French Athletics Federation has been closely monitoring the events in constant collaboration with the authorities. The safety of athletes, coaches, volunteers, officials, spectators and all staff remains at the forefront,” said the FFA.

Among the measures put in place to reduce the heat, FFA said delaying the opening of stadium gates to the public, strengthening medical and emergency services, as well as providing additional drinking water facilities and shaded areas.

The average temperature recorded at 30 locations by the weather agency Meteo France on Thursday reached 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) again, equaling the record for the hottest day in the world the day before.

More than three-quarters of France has been placed under a red weather warning for the first time.
