The Home Office is to introduce new “covered safe and legal” routes for asylum seekers to come to the UK later this year.
The department said it would allow organizations such as universities, community groups and businesses to sponsor migrants applying to come to Britain, which is based on Canada’s asylum system.
Alongside the new asylum line, the government said it would continue to make changes to how human rights and modern slavery laws are applied to asylum applications, which the government said would eliminate “vexatious” claims.
Interior Minister Shabana Mahmoud said the new system would protect “genuine refugees” and “close loopholes that have often been abused.”
She said: “Britain has always offered refuge to people fleeing war and persecution.
But this system can only exist if the people believe that it is fair, controlled and not subject to violence.
The announcement comes as the home secretary prepares to put his immigration bill before the Commons, elements of which are likely to be opposed by some Labor MPs.
The UK has a relatively small number of refugees supported in communities under the UK Resettlement Scheme (UKRS), but the Home Office says the “majority” of refugees are supported by local councils.
The government has been under pressure to reduce the number of people being accommodated in hotels at taxpayers’ expense, and the illegal entry of small boats has undermined public confidence in the asylum system.
The new lines allow a wider number of organizations to support those coming, including “trusted universities”.
The department said the new scheme would ultimately shape the future of the UK’s asylum system and that it would “operate at full capacity” once the UKRS is fully established.
A migrant job line is expected to open next year, allowing employers to sponsor migrants, according to the Home Office.
Applications for the university route will open at the end of this year, with the first arrivals taking place in 2027.
The government did not say how many people would be allowed to reach the new lines, but said it would be closed and start at a lower level.
He also said the Home Office controls which organizations can sponsor an asylum seeker and that all applicants are subject to strict scrutiny.
At the same time as opening up new routes to the UK for asylum seekers, the department said it would reduce false claims.
The government has already confirmed it will reform how the right to family life under the European Convention on Human Rights is enforced, saying it is unfair to appeal rejected applications.
The Home Office is making changes to how the Modern Slavery Act is applied, which includes removing a foreign national’s custody rights or where a custody order has been imposed, or where there is evidence.
This is the latest announcement on UK asylum policy The home secretary came into conflict with her junior minister, Mike Tapp.
He used the Times article to argue that foreign care workers should be exempted from the Home Secretary’s plans to change visa rules for migrants already living in the UK under the upcoming immigration bill.
Mahmoud Tapp called for his expulsion but was refused by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
