Earthquake monitoring agency EMSC reported in a press release that the latest quake occurred 61 kilometers (36 miles) northwest of Maracay in northern Venezuela.

Details are not yet known, but Reuters reported that tremors from Friday’s earthquake were felt in Maracay and Caracasciting local witnesses.

The South American country is still reeling from two earthquakes on Wednesday, one that registered 7.2 and the other 7.5 on the Richter scale of nine points.

The death toll is expected to rise, with the US Geological Survey estimating that the number of injured could exceed 10,000.

At least 3,360 people are reported to have been injured, and more than 172 people are trapped under the rubble. The number of people missing has exceeded 50,000, according to the Venezuelan government.

On Friday, the Minister of the Interior Diosdado Cabello announced that some of the areas most affected by the earthquake in the state of La Guaira will be closed.

Residents of the area have been preparing to gather supplies and search for survivors. Some have even used their vehicles as fully equipped ambulances.

The Venezuelan government, meanwhile, has loosened restrictions on social media sites such as X, which were closed after the 2024 presidential election.

This has also led to community members sharing information about missing loved ones.

25-year-old Jennifer Palacios, whose 6-year-old son was buried under the rubble, said: “It’s the people of the community who managed to get people out alive.” “We want them to bring in cranes to move the slabs. There are still people trapped.”
