US President Donald Trump has vowed to impose 100 percent tariffs on any European country that imposes a digital services tax on US tech giants.
Writing on Truth Social, Trump said “several European countries” are discussing such a tax, and some are close to doing so.
They warned that the sanctions would take effect immediately and “override” existing bilateral trade agreements.
While the post targeted countries planning the “imminent implementation” of new taxes, the exact implications for the UK were not immediately clear as London has such a thing. Tax on the spot for a certain period of time.
“Please let this statement represent that any country that imposes a tariff will immediately impose a 100% tariff on all goods exported to the United States of America,” he wrote.
Britain’s 2% Digital Services Tax (DST) on major search engines, social media platforms and online marketplaces was introduced in April 2020.
The tax will apply to global technology companies such as Apple, Google, Meta and Amazon, and will specifically target companies with a UK turnover of over £500m and £25m.
It raised more than £800 million in 2024–25, up from £678 million in 2023–24, according to the Treasury.
The Department of Trade and Commerce and the Treasury have been asked to comment.
Friday’s tariff warning is the latest in a series of announcements by President Trump’s administration about new import taxes since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned several precedents in February.
Earlier this month, the US Dozens of countries announced a new tariff of 10-12.5% Imports are almost entirely responsible for not doing enough to tackle forced labour.
