US President Donald Trump has accused Iran of “foolish violations” of an accord with Washington after an attack on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz.
No injuries were reported after the ship was hit by a projectile on Thursday. In response, the United Nations’ International Maritime Organization (IMO) halted plans to evacuate more than 11,000 sailors along the key shipping line.
Trump took to Truth Social on Friday to claim that Iran had shot down at least four drones in one strike.
“Of course, this is a stupid violation of our ceasefire agreement,” he wrote.
Tehran has not responded directly, but Iranian state media is covering the talks.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which was hit by the attack, warned that any attempt to cross the sea through the IMO-designated route would be “unacceptable and completely dangerous” and that ships should coordinate with Iran.
Iran’s state media is also reporting new statements on Friday from the IRGC that the tension is Iranian territory.
Trump said he would shoot down three drones, one of which hit the upper deck of a “large and very expensive cargo ship.”
“There was damage but the ship was able to continue its journey,” he said.
His comments reflect the ship’s owner’s report that there was some damage and that the ship was safely at sea.
According to Britain’s maritime safety agency UKMTO, the ship was hit by an “unidentified projectile” 7.5 nautical miles southeast of Oman’s Dahit port.
The Singapore-flagged vessel Ever Lovely was following the UKMTO’s recommended route when it was hit, said Ever Green, owner of the vessel.
“All crew members are safe, as is the ship and all cargo,” he added.
