Child sexual abuse campaigners have slammed disgraced former BBC news presenter Huw Edwards for his choice to launch a blog as “inappropriate and disrespectful”, with one calling it a “shocking lack of awareness”.
Edwards in 2024 41 admitted to accessing images of childrenIncluding seven of the most serious and was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for two years.
On Wednesday, he launched the Substack blog, which offers “opinion and analysis” on topics such as current affairs and mental health.
But Edwards has been criticized by some for being “remorseless.”
In response to the criticism, Edwards wrote on his blog that “those who have been exposed to the article may have missed the point of the blog.”
Edwards, who has been on the sex offenders register for seven years, told the BBC in a public statement in March that he was “deeply remorseful and remorseful” when he appeared in court in 2024.
Emma Jane Taylor, founder of the grassroots charity Project 90-10, said: “To think that he can simply go back on the public stage and pass it off as if nothing happened shows a staggering lack of awareness.”
The 53-year-old child sexual abuse survivor, who works full-time in the fitness and wellness sector and runs the charity, believes in the need for “better awareness, better protection and better training”.
In response to Edwards’ blog, she said, “I’m very upset about this. I decided to speak out in my 40s because of personal trauma. So many people are too scared to have this conversation, so we don’t.”
“If it was a neighbor’s door, everyone would be against it. And I don’t doubt that people would be, but some would say it deserves a second chance.
“He’s on the sex offenders register – that shouldn’t give him the right to blog. We don’t want to hear from you, Huw,” she said.
