The rematch between boxing great Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather has been postponed, the Filipino fighter’s camp says.
Pacquiao, 47, and Mayweather, 49, were Professional rematch agreed Live on Netflix at the Sphere in Las Vegas on Saturday, September 19.
Former world champion Mayweather has announced that he will come out of retirement for his first professional fight after defeating mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor in 2017.
Filipino Pacquiao, who hung up his gloves in 2021, came out of retirement last year to fight former WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios, who retained his title after a draw.
On Friday, Pacquiao’s camp released a statement saying “a volatile mix of federal litigation, schedule overbooking and financial complications surrounding the Mayweather camp as a whole” caused the postponement.
The statement added that the rematch could now take place in early 2027.
Event company CSI sued Mayweather last week to recover at least $4.65m (£3.52m) it paid The American for exclusive rights to promote the Pacquiao rematch and an exhibition bout. Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson which failed to materialize.
“If Mayweather and CSI settle their internal contract dispute out of court, the promoters will immediately pivot to rescheduling a postponed showdown between Mayweather and Mike Tyson, tentatively targeting September 12,” Pacquiao’s team said in a statement.
Mayweather, who has won all 50 of his professional fights and Pacquiao, who holds 12 world titles in eight weight classes, fought in 2015 in what was dubbed the ‘fight of the century’ and remains the richest in boxing history.
The Americans emerged victorious in Las Vegas by a wide unanimous decision.
Since retiring from professional boxing in 2017, there have been several exhibition fights, including a fight against Mayweather YouTuber Logan Paul.
His next exhibition fight was scheduled to be against Greek kickboxing star Mike Zambidis in Athens on Saturday, but ESPN reported that the fight was called off after CSI sought a ban.
