A mother died after saving her son from an earthquake in Venezuela

A Venezuelan mother has died trying to save her child during an earthquake in the country, soccer player Hector Bello and local media reported.

Bello said his wife Andrea, whom Venezuelan news media called his “dear love,” saved their infant son’s life during two powerful earthquakes.

“I will tell her the story of how I saved her, my love – how you gave your life to our daughter, how you were a brave woman who didn’t give up on her, even when you were taking your last breath,” Bello wrote in the post.

Rescuers continue to search for survivors after twin earthquakes near the capital Caracas killed at least 589 people and injured 2,980.

In a series of posts, Bello traveled to Caracas where his daughter was in the hospital.

“My daughter and her aunt are doing well, they will not be released today – they are in the hospital. Thank you so much for helping me through this terrible illness,” he posted on Friday night.

In a separate Instagram story, Bello wrote: “How can I explain to your daughter that she lost your life to save your daughter and I wasn’t there to do anything? How do I explain? Give me strength now.”

Cumana de Campeones, a local Venezuelan soccer player’s press and advertising agency, posted about her death.

“We are saddened to report that the partner of footballer Hector Bello “Kike” – originally Cumana – was found dead in the rubble following the earthquake that hit the country.

“But their daughter survived the collapse of the building where the whole family lives.”

US Spanish-language news outlet Univision also reported the death of Bello’s wife.
