A big thank you for the 20% annual increase before taking the protest to another level shows the confidence the players and their representatives feel.
While the average UK employee can currently expect a 3.4% annual pay rise, and is guaranteed to take home £80,000 if they lose in the first round at Wimbledon, there may be a lack of sympathy among the general public.
But for the players it’s not about the annual raise, it’s about getting a higher percentage of the revenue they help the All England Club generate.
The AELTC counters with the argument that the revenue does not take into account their costs, or investment in infrastructure and other grass-court events.
But the players feel emboldened, and won’t bemoan the lost media opportunity, especially if they can avoid fines.
French Open prize money increases were in the single digits, but players received 16% at the Australian Open and are hoping this year’s US Open will at least match the 20% increase they were offered last year.
They are slowly but surely getting what they want in salaries, though asking for an additional 1.5% revenue per year until 2030.
These statistics may not be distributed across the board, so can the issue be resolved through negotiation, or will it revert to a game where players threaten strike action – and are more credible than they have been to date?
