The “sad inevitability” of European warming

“There is a sad inevitability to all of this, scientists like me keep writing the same words year after year,” Friederike Otto, a professor of climate science at Imperial College London who heads World Weather Attribution, a group that works to link weather events to climate change, said in an email. “In short, we’re still on a path to a very dangerous future, and it’s time to hit the brakes.”

It is a world in motion more than 1.5 degrees Celsius of human-induced warming, it is not surprising that extreme heat events are increasing in frequency, intensity, and duration, said Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at the California Institute for Water Resources at the University of California, Los Angeles.

“A rising tide lifts all boats,” he said. Climate change is not just about increasing the temperature by increasing the temperature by a few degrees. For the worst case scenario, scientists they will find that warm weather can increase meteorological measurementsincreasing the temperature of the waves and sometimes even leading to drought.

In western Europe, a weather phenomenon known as a blocking pattern—essentially a traffic jam in the air that can amplify the weather—has increased, and scientists are experimenting they are currently investigating the connection between these systems, human-made global warming, and heat waves.

“Heat waves will continue to increase temperatures until we reach zero,” Helen Millman, a climate scientist and researcher at the Global Systems Institute at the University of Exeter, said in an email. “While people are concerned about the future cost of decarbonising, the costs are small compared to what we will pay to fix a world with a bad climate.”

Noah Diffenbaugh, a professor of earth sciences at Stanford University who has been the secretary general of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, said that even the European Union he achieves his goal of reaching net zero by 2050, there are still four more years of greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere.
