Morocco repeats Cameroon’s historic record… and Hakimi is unique in achieving the special feat

The Atlas Lions continue to put up numbers in the World Cup

I witnessed Morocco and Haiti face offwhich was held in the early hours of Thursday morning as part of the third and final round of the 2026 World Cup Group C competition, achieving historic Moroccan football records both at the level of the national team and some of its stars.

Morocco entered the competition with a notable continental achievement after Morocco reached 26 matches in their history, equaling Cameroon’s record as the most capped African team at the World Cup, according to French network Statesfoot.

This number reflects the growing status of the Atlas Lions on the global stage, especially after the strong presence the team has shown in recent editions of the tournament.

On an individual level, Ashraf Hakimi continued to cement his place among the legends of Moroccan football after he became the player with the most appearances for the national team in major tournaments, taking part in his 31st World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations matches.

The captain of the Moroccan national team has thus surpassed the previous number, which he shared with Youssef En-Nessiri, who played 30 matches in two tournaments.

The Paris Saint-Germain star also continued to close in on the all-time record for the Moroccan national team as he took his tally to 99 international caps, leaving him just one match away from reaching the 100 mark.

The all-time list is topped by Noureddine Naybet with 115 international caps, followed by Hakimi with 99 caps, then Ahmed Firas with 94 caps and Yassin Bunu with 93 caps, while Youssef En-Nesiri is 5th with 92 caps.

The match also witnessed a new achievement for Sofiane Amrabat after she became the second Moroccan to appear in three World Cups after Hakimi.

Amrabat participated for the first time in the current season against Haiti after missing the Brazil-Scotland matches.

Amrabat and Hakimi played in the tournament for the third time in their careers, after appearing in 2018, 2022 and 2026.
