In a surprise move, hours before the crucial 2026 World Cup, the US Department of Homeland Security announced the easing of restrictions on Iran’s national team, allowing them to enter US territory 48 hours before they are expected to face Egypt in the third round of Group 7.
The decision revealed by the ministry’s spokesperson states that the Iranian delegation must leave immediately after the meeting, which will take place on Friday evening, Seattle time. Accordingly, today, Wednesday, the Iranian national team will leave its camp in the Mexican city of Tijuana, leaving for Seattle, preparing for the fateful confrontation.
Andrew Giuliani, executive director of FIFA’s White House team, told the Associated Press, and the network reported:Sky News ArabiaThe extension came after “monitoring the progress of the first two flights … If everything goes smoothly, we will extend an extra day due to the long journey.”
The move, first revealed by NBC News, comes in conjunction with diplomatic talks between Washington and Tehran on ending the war in Iran.
Iran’s national team has repeatedly complained about travel restrictions that have affected its preparations. Last March, FIFA rejected a request to move its matches to Mexico, but later agreed to move its camp from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana.
However, a number of team administrators and technical staff members were not allowed to accompany the mission, and in two previous matches near Los Angeles, the team was not allowed to leave until the day before the game. This is what technical director Amir Kala Noy considered a direct reason to affect the performance of the team, who settled for a 2-2 draw with New Zealand and a draw against Belgium.
Egypt’s national team manager Ibrahim Hassan confirmed that security authorities had rejected a request to host the national team in Seattle as planned after the World Cup game in New Zealand, and so the national team delegation returned to Spokane.
Ibrahim Hasan added in official announcements to the Egyptian Football AssociationThe team wanted to travel directly to Seattle to protect the players from the stress of frequent travel in preparation for the June 26 match against Iran, but the Egyptian delegation returned to Spokane after the security situation.
