Egyptian international referee Mahmoud Ashour continues to strengthen his position among the world’s elite referees after the International Football Federation (FIFA) Chief Referee Committee selected him as the video technology assistant referee for the match against America and Turkey in the third round of the 2026 World Cup group stage.
According to a statement from the Egyptian Football Association, Ashour was selected as part of the international refereeing team led by Algerian Mustafa Ghorbal as the referee, his countryman Mokran Gourari as the first assistant and Akram Abbas Zahroni as the second assistant, with the fourth referee being Emirati Omar Al Ali and the reserve referee Mohamed Al Hamadi.
The video technology team includes Spain’s Antonio Garcia as head referee, Egypt’s Mahmoud Ashour as assistant referee and Lara Juan as assistant referee.

The match will be held next Friday at five o’clock in the morning, Cairo time, at the Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood, California, within the framework of the fourth group competition.
The assignment marks Mahmoud Ashour’s fifth appearance at the current World Cup, making him the most-capped Egyptian referee in the tournament’s history. This continued participation reflects the high technical level and discipline he has demonstrated since the competition’s inception, as he is considered one of the leading names in video technology management at an international level.
