It is not clear what specific language prompted Sir Lindsay’s intervention.
A Conservative source said Badenoch was unhappy that Labor MPs “don’t like them”, a reference to the sitcom Dad’s Army.
But a Labor source said the comments were linked to the Speaker’s criticism of Mr Philipson.
After the pair exchanged words in the divisional lobbies, a Labor source Badenoch told Phillipson: “You’re mean, I’ll never stop talking about how mean you are.”
“The public is going to find out who you really are,” Phillipson reportedly replied.
According to a Conservative source, Badenoch told Phillipson “I’ll fight you all the way, you’re destroying children’s lives” – but this was later denied by a source close to Phillipson.
Phillipson later posted on social media that “Kemi lost her head at PMQs – and afterwards”, saying the Conservative leader had previously compared her to a “Gestapo officer”.
She added: “I wonder what it means for a working woman to end the tax breaks for private schools that the Tories hate so much and make record investment in state schools.”
Earlier in the Commons, Sir Keir defended Phillipson and her “remarkable record of social activism and achievement” after growing up in poverty.
He said, “She knows that education is very important for poor children and that’s why it drives her every priority and value.
“The truth is, if you knew so much about poor children, you wouldn’t have hired fewer teachers,” Aden replied.
The Prime Minister strongly defended other ministers, including Reve, who said he had “ended austerity” and delivered a “correct economic plan” to help him “manage the global storms” including the Iran conflict.
Sir Kerr said he believed he would leave the country “in better shape”.
