Luke Littler joked that Premier League darts needed another Scottish player to “pick up the atmosphere” as he reacted to the ‘flat’ Aberdeen crowd following his win on Night 13.
The world champion enjoyed a superb night to beat Luke Humphries 6-5 in the final, but has been a victim of what has become customary for Littler throughout much of this year’s Premier League Darts campaign.
But a ‘confident’ Littler was all smiles after the night’s win took him to the top of the table, leapfrogging Jonny Clayton with three Premier League nights ahead of the final at the O2 on May 28, live on Sky Sports.
“I was definitely relaxed tonight,” Littler said at his press conference. “Obviously the crowd was a little flat tonight. I think all the players said that. But, another win, and I’ll take it.”
“I think I said maybe the biggest crowd I’ve ever had in front of Rotterdam last week or the week before and I got over it. Won a few games, lost the final. Now we can just focus on the O2.”
Littler had previously joked in his post-victory interview: “The crowd was OK tonight, but certainly not the loudest. I think we need one more Scottish player to lift the atmosphere a bit in our Premier League!”
Littler’s victory marked the latest display of his brilliant recent form, reaching three finals in as many weeks.
“You always work hard in the early stages and then you relax a bit in the final. Um and yes, obviously I’ve got a very good record in the Premier League.
“I want to get my hands on the trophy, but I have to focus on the semi-finals when it comes around.”
The 19-year-old was also full of praise for his opponent in the final, who returned to form with key wins over Michael van Gerwen and Gian van Veen before eventually succumbing to Littler.
“(Luke Humphries) needed it tonight. Even the win against Michael (Van Gerwen) was really important for him. He slowed down his throat a little bit, and yeah, it was flowing.
“His worst leg was the last leg. I took full advantage. Hopefully he can back it up in Leeds and hopefully he can win on his home ground.”
Sky Sports Darts’ Wayne Mardell:
“Before the Premier League started, Littler had four wins in the first year, six in the second year and sure enough it was going to be seven, eight, nine here, but then it stopped a bit.
“But the way he’s dealt with it over the last two weeks – that final wasn’t a coast, it was a tough game.
“He gets through those stressful moments better than anyone else. That’s the difference.
“Nobody can handle pressure on the dartboard better than Luke Littler right now. That’s why he’s winning.
“When you’re up 5-3 in the final, it’s a missed opportunity for Humphries.
“If you get the winning throw in a tournament or a night, you feel like you’ve got a chance.
“Unfortunately, Luke Littler decided ‘I’m not going to give you a chance to win.’
“Humphreys smashed Littler in 10 darts, but he didn’t take the chance later because of Littler’s brilliance.
“He’s in a good position from before the night started, it’s three welcome points. He has to believe he can still make the playoffs, but tonight will be disappointing for him.”
