Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz has made sarcastic comments after their goalless draw against England in the 2nd round of the 2026 World Cup group stage, expressing his anger at refereeing decisions which he believes denied him a penalty and sent off one of the opposition’s players.
Ghana forced England to a draw after managing to close down spaces and thwart the Three Lions’ attempts, despite England having 79% of the ball, the highest percentage of a team not to have scored in a World Cup match in 60 years.
The final minutes saw a controversial moment when Ghana’s players claimed a penalty after Ezri Konsa interfered with substitute Prince Adu in the penalty area, but the referee ordered play on amid widespread protests from Ghanaians.
during Queiroz said Press conference after the game: “I’m not sure if VAR still works in the World Cup. Does it still exist? I have some doubts about that.”
He added sarcastically. “There was a clear penalty in favor of Ghana, which was not awarded. England got very lucky. Again, it looks like the VAR referees went for a coffee.”
The Portuguese coach continued. “Sometimes I want to drink coffee too, but what happened was clearly a penalty and a red card. Do you doubt that or am I the only one who watched the match?’
Despite his criticism, Queiroz acknowledged the overall fairness of the result, saying: “England had more possession but we fought better and created our chances and they had chances at the end too. I think they’re happy with the draw and so am I.”
He added smiling. “I apologize for my sarcasm, but if I say these things seriously, I may be punished.”
