Los Cafeteros secure qualification before facing Ronaldo’s team-mates
Colombia officially qualified for the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Democratic Republic of Congo at the Guadalajara Stadium on Wednesday morning in the second round of Group Three competition.
The star of the match was Daniel Muñoz, who scored the only winning goal in the 76th minute, giving his team three points and confirming Los Cafeteros’ qualification for the knockout stage for the second time in a row.
The match saw Colombia in clear control of the game as they threatened Congolese goalkeeper Lionel Mbassi from the first minute, and Munoz almost opened the scoring early on when his shot hit the right post in the 3rd minute as he continued to press forward while Congo relied on counter-attacks to threaten the Colombian goal.
Colombia’s closest chance came when Luis Suarez missed a chance in the 40th minute that was blocked by defenders, but Munoz came back in the 76th minute to collect a ball from Juan Fernando Quintero and fire a left-handed shot into the bottom right corner of the net from the right edge of the area to score a valuable winner.
The match saw a number of substitutions from both sides as the Colombia coach made several substitutions in an attempt to bolster the attack, which included the introduction of Juan Fernando Quintero for James Rodriguez and John Cordoba for Luis Suarez, while Congolese coach Desabre brought in new substitutes to revitalize the attack, but to no avail.
Congo tried to equalize in the dying minutes as Nathaniel Mboko shot the ball from outside the area in the 90th minute, but Colombia goalkeeper Camilo Vargas blocked it. In the 92nd minute, Charles Bickel also missed a header, but Colombia’s defense kept the goal intact until the end.
With this victory, Colombia leads the group with 6 points, securing qualification and dedicates itself to the fight to decide the first place in the group, when they meet Portugal with 4 points at the end of the first round competition.
Congo, who are in third place with one point, also have a good chance against Uzbekistan in the finals.
