Serena Williams comeback: How will she fare at Wimbledon in singles comeback?

Williams has not won a Grand Slam since the 2017 Australian Open, when she was 35. She has since given birth to two daughters – Olympia, now eight, and two-year-old Adira.

Since her first comeback in 2018, Williams has reached four Grand Slam finals – twice at Wimbledon and twice at the US Open – but lost them all.

Her past two Wimbledon appearances – in 2021 and 2022 – ended in first-round defeats.

What Williams has going for him is one of the greatest technical talents of all time – and an unmatched aura.

A 24th major win to tie Margaret Court’s all-time women’s record looks out of reach, but Williams will look to the open nature of the WTA Tour and feels there are plenty of players she can still beat.

The power and accuracy of his serve was particularly effective on grass and he will hope his opening shot can earn him plenty of free points.

His chances of winning a match at Wimbledon are certainly favourable, especially if he faces a relatively inexperienced opponent who might be overwhelmed by being forced to have an electric occasion on center court.

World number nine Victoria Mboko played doubles with Williams at Queen’s and the veteran was sure to be “ready to go”.

“He has such clean ball striking. He can take years off and once he steps on the court he will probably find his rhythm and timing again,” said the 19-year-old Canadian.

“I think it’s really a God-given gift that he has. I’m hitting with him and he’s hitting pretty big.”

In her prime, Williams was the epitome of fitness and athleticism.

Last year, she admitted she used weight-loss drugs to address what she called the “stigma” surrounding using such drugs.

Williams said she struggled to lose the weight she gained during pregnancy — a common experience for many women — and returned to tennis.

“We’ve all seen him. He looks incredible and in good shape when he leaves the game,” Davenport, who won three Grand Slam titles, said.

“But we have to be a little nicer in the amount of time we give him until he reaches his peak.”

Williams may not be anywhere near her best, and she doesn’t know how long this comeback will last.

But one thing’s for sure: the woman many consider the GOAT will be swinging in an attempt to recapture her former glory.
