British authorities have raised the country’s terror threat level to the second highest, indicating that an attack within the next six months is “very likely”.

Police said Essa Suleiman, 45, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and one count of possessing a blade in public in connection with the attack. He was also charged with attempted murder in connection with an incident earlier that day in south London.

Suleiman has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Police say Suleiman resisted arrest and was arrested using a taser. The Met’s chief constable, Mark Rowley, said the officers who arrested a man after Wednesday’s murder of two Jewish men in north London were “shaken” after the incident.

UK Green Party leader Zack Polanski also posted a photo of X accusing the police of “repeatedly and brutally hitting a mentally ill man in the head” when he had already failed to be beaten. A video showing the violent arrest was widely circulated.

Asked if the police’s actions were “justifiable”, Rowley told LBC radio on Friday morning: “I sat down with the police on Wednesday afternoon, a few hours after the attack, and you can still see them shaking.

“They took the terrorists, and what happened was that they were scared, because they didn’t follow through on anything, even when they were knocked down with a taser, they were afraid that they might have an explosive device from what they were doing, they didn’t, and they used a lot of force,” he said.

Asked if it was “necessary” to hit the man on the head during the arrest, Rowley said: “He’s using force that seems (sic) necessary.”

“Unless you’re in a time where you’re really scared and you’re dealing with a really dangerous person, it’s hard to put yourself out there.

“They’re really worried about surprising him and confusing him.

“I don’t like politics, but if someone famous, instead of having some problems on the media, if someone has said or done something that I feel is in danger of undermining the confidence of my officers to act – because they need the support of the people – now they have to intervene, and that’s what I did with the letter.”

In a letter to Polanski, Rowley wrote that he was “disappointed”, adding that the articles were “accurate and false”.

The stabbing, which took place in a predominantly Jewish area of ​​London, was reported on television by the Community Security Trust, an organization that provides safety and security advice to Jewish communities and buildings such as synagogues.

One of the victims, a 34-year-old man, has been released from hospital, while the 76-year-old is doing well, police said.

There are growing concerns about foreign-linked security forces, which the government says has helped fuel violence, including against Jews, in recent weeks.

Last week, the Finchley Reform Synagogue in north London was targeted. Other incidents have followed, including attacks on the Kenton United Synagogue in Harrow and a Jewish charity.

Many of these incidents have been reported by HAI, whose name stands for the Islamic Movement of the People of the Right Hand.
