Parts of India are facing extreme heat – the temperature has soared above 46 degrees Celsius. But a lesser-known story unfolds after dark. As temperatures soar after sunset, a vital human need is threatened: sleep. Scientific studies show that warmer nights are causing more of us to lose our eyesight around the world. Our bodies need to cool down to sleep – but hot nights make it that much harder. And the effects go beyond fatigue; Disturbed sleep is associated with poor cardiovascular health and depression. Women, children, the elderly, and people living in low-income tropical countries are most commonly affected. Experts warn that due to climate change, the effect of global warming on our sleep and health will worsen. In this edition of Climate Question, host Gregg Jackson talks to sleep expert Dr Sophie Bostock and BBC Marathi correspondent Janhavi Mull. They explore how rising temperatures are disrupting sleep in India and beyond – and share practical tips on how to stay cool in a hot world.
