EES: Stop pretending the EU’s new border system is working, says airports chief.

The head of Europe’s airports lobby group says the threat of the region’s new digital border control system is keeping him and other industry bosses up at night.

At the beginning of this year, the European Union completed the list Entry-Exit System (EES). Most European countries require travelers from outside the EU to register biometric data upon entry, which will also be checked upon exit.

Although EES has been working well in some countries, it has caused huge delays at various airports and some passengers are said to have lost their flights.

ACI Europe President Stefan Schulte said politicians “should stop pretending … the EES is working properly. It’s not.”

“Passengers are queuing for hours at peak hours and I don’t know how we can cope with the expected increase in traffic in the coming weeks,” Schulte, head of the company that owns Frankfurt Airport, told an industry event in Prague.

The BBC has contacted the European Commission, which oversees the EEA, for comment.
