Messi continues to have fun
Lionel Messi continued to write history in golden letters after he scored four goals in Argentina’s 2-0 win over Austria at the 2026 World Cup to become the tournament’s all-time top scorer, overtaking German legend Miroslav Klose.
The Guinness Book of World Records recorded four achievements for the Rosario star in his sixth World Cup appearance as he took his tally to 18, surpassing Klose’s 16. She also overtook Brazil’s Marta (17 goals at the Women’s World Cup) to become the all-time top scorer in all categories, despite the threat of France’s Kylian Mbappe, who has 16 goals and is just 27 years old.

Messi did not stop at the top scorer of all time as he recorded his 18th victory in the World Cup finals, overtaking Klose (17 wins), and also took his tally to 28 matches, surpassing Germany’s Lothar Matthaus’ record of 26.
“The Flea” added a fourth record by logging 2,489 minutes in a World Cup finals, extending the gap to Italy’s Paolo Maldini, who amassed 2,217 minutes after adding nearly 100 minutes in games against Algeria and Austria.
A career full of accomplishments
Messi’s journey began at the 2006 World Cup in Germany when he was 19 years old, and he went on to play in 6 consecutive games (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, 2026), winning 18 out of 28 games, including the historic title in Qatar.
Despite these astronomical numbers, Messi continues to be threatened by Mbappe, who is closely following his footsteps as the Frenchman has 16 goals as a youngster, leaving the battle for the all-time top goalscorer open for the future, especially as the ‘Moose’ continue to add new numbers to the Albileste’s shirt with every game.
