A shocking fall for the Saudi Al-Ahly goalkeeper
Not only did Norway striker Erling Holland secure a 3-2 win over Senegal to qualify for the 2026 World Cup round of 32, but he became another strike hero, causing concern in the Senegalese camp after he indirectly caused an injury to goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
Haaland scored twice in the match to take his tally to four in the current World Cup campaign and lead Norway to a fourth point in second place in Group 9, behind leaders France.
Mendy’s injury occurred while trying to stop Holland’s shot, which resulted in Norway’s third goal in the 58th minute, as the Senegalese goalkeeper fell heavily on his left knee while clearing the ball.
Despite receiving treatment on the pitch, Mendy was unable to finish the match, leaving just minutes after the goal with fears that he had picked up an injury that could keep him out of the game.

According to stadium injury specialist Tamer Al-Shahrani, the nature of the injury and the way Mendy landed on his left knee could indicate more than one medical possibility.
Al-Shahrani explained that the best-case scenario is for the goalkeeper to have a minor knee bruise, while there are still concerns about knee cartilage or collateral ligament damage, which require careful investigations and X-rays to determine their severity.
Senegal’s medical staff are awaiting the results of final tests in the coming hours to determine the position of the veteran goalkeeper, at a time when the national team is under a lot of pressure after a second successive defeat in the tournament.
