World Cup 2026: England captain Thomas Tuchel is not a fan of water cuts

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has admitted he is not a fan of the controversial water shortage being used at the World Cup.

Tuchel, 52, was in Boston on Wednesday (21:00 BST) for England’s second Group L game against Ghana, with rain and cold weather forecast.

England fans began mocking the now-regular halftime break during the first half of their opener against Croatia in Dallas, despite the game being played under a roof in an air-conditioned arena.

The breaks will continue to be used in Boston regardless of the weather, but Tuchel explained his position about them and the impact they’re having on games.

“I think it interrupts and changes the identity of a football match more than I thought. Before, the wet breaks were really hot and needed, but they were shorter,” Tuchel said.

“They were shorter and only in a few matches. Here, for the sake of fairness, now it is done in every match for every team.

“It breaks the game in four quarters. And I think it changes the character of the game more than I thought.”
