The French star reflects on the achievements of the legends
France and Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe established himself as the rightful heir to the great scorers of major tournaments by scoring against Iraq early Tuesday morning.
14 minutes after the start of the match held in bad weather conditions and rain, the “roosters” took the lead with a goal scored by Mbappe against Iraq.
After Mbappe (15 goals) moved closer to legend Lionel Messi’s all-time World Cup goalscorer (18 goals) against Austria tonight, the French star has placed himself on a rare European list topped by legend Cristiano Ronaldo.
The goal in Iraq took Mbappe’s tally in major tournaments with the Roosters to 16 (15 World Cups + 1 UEFA Nations Cup), level with German legend Jurgen Klinsmann, according to Statsfoot, where the 26-year-old became Europe’s fifth-highest scorer in a number of major tournaments.
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who has yet to score at the 2026 World Cup, tops the list (22) after the World Cup and Euros, followed by Germany’s Miroslav Klose (19), then his legendary compatriot Gerd Muller (18) and current England captain Harry Kane (17 goals).
European players who have scored the most goals in major tournaments (World Cup + EUROS):
22 🇵🇹 Cristiano Ronaldo
19 🇩🇪 Miroslav Klose
18 🇩🇪 Gerd Müller
17 🏴 Harry Kane
16 🇩🇪 Jurgen Klinsmann
16 🇫🇷 Kylian Mbappe #DAYS— Stats Foot (@Statsdufoot) June 22, 2026
Mbappe is now seen as the biggest threat to Messi in the race for the all-time World Cup goalscorer, as his age (26) allows him to play at least twice in the World Cup, while Messi (38) is likely to be in his final campaign.
The same applies to Ronaldo’s Euro and World Cup tally, as the current World Cup is the last for the 41-year-old “Don”.
