Source of Strange Repeating Radio Signals From Space Identified

There is a what a surprise radio stations arrive from time to time spacehowever, their source is not known at all. Known as “long-period radio transients” (LPTs), these phenomena are observed as the radio is blasting which repeats every few minutes to several hours. Only twelve examples have been found within Milky Wayand their physical nature has long been unknown.

Previous studies have shown that potential sources of LPT include neutron stars known as “magnets,” which rotate slowly, and binary systems consist of white white and his fellow stars. However, the magnetic theory faces the challenge of contradicting existing models.

On the other hand, although several cases showing the merging of pure binaries have been reported, there have been no cases in which the reinforcement process has been directly proven to occur.

Based on this, an international research team led by the University of Sydney in Australia conducted a space survey using the radio telescope “Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP)” and discovered the reality of the mysterious object called “ASKAP J174508.9-505149.” The result of watching this is said to be the strongest evidence to date pointing to LPT as one of the sources of this phenomenon.

“For the first time we have explained where these signals come from,” he said Kovi Rose, a doctoral student at the University of Sydney’s School of Physics and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), in a press release. “We have been able to show that the source of one of these transients comes from a white star that is pulling material from its companion star.”

White Dwarf and his Star Companion

Rose and his research team confirmed through observations that ASKAP J1745-5051 shows hydrogen emission lines (Balmer series) and helium emission lines (HeI and HeII). In particular, the strong HeII line is known to be a form of “magnetic cataclysmic variables.”

Caaclysmic transitions are the general term for closed binary systems where a white star grows from another star. Among these, the white dwarf has a strong magnetic field and gas accretions along the magnetic lines are called “magnetic cataclysmic variables.”

In addition, the analysis of the radial velocities of the radio emission lines of Balmer showed that the orbital period of this binary system is about 1.368 hours, which was determined to be consistent with the radio frequency repetition period, about 1.345 hours. Also, based on the period of orbit around the sun, the mass of the companion star is estimated to be about 0.096 times that of the sun, and its diameter is about 0.13 times that of the sun, indicating that it is similar to the small red area of the M6 type.

In other words, ASKAP J1745-5051 is a binary system in which the white and red stars orbit each other at great distances. A white star is the very remnant of a star that has reached the end of its life; although its size is equal to the earth, its weight is equal to that of the sun. Its companion, called a red dwarf, is larger but smaller, with a mass one-tenth that of the Sun. The two stars orbit each other in a period of just over an hour.

Double Mystery Revealed by Radio Waves and X-rays

These observations have shown that radio bursts and X-ray emissions are produced by different processes. When the white cloth emits gas from its counterpart, the gas is heated and emits X-rays. At the same time, a powerful radio burst occurs in the region where the magnetic field of the two stars interacts. However, since the radio and X-ray peaks do not coincide, they are believed to be produced at different locations within the system.

As for X-rays, data from the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ “Einstein Probe” observatory satellite revealed radiation that lasts for about 1.32 hours. According to the researchers, the large number of X-ray fluctuations indicates that the number of white dwarfs is changing over time.
