The US wants to negotiate and is warning of ‘massive atrocities’ as the military surrounds the city.

The United States has expressed concern over reports that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and its allies are on the move. El-Obeid in Sudan, warning of “great violence” if the army attacks the city.

The US State Department said in a statement on Monday that the RSF was “strong” around El-Obeidsaying that further escalation could have a detrimental effect on civilians and reiterated the call for a negotiated settlement to the conflict.

“There are alarming indications that mass violence may occur, adding to the already dangerous situation in Sudan,” the press release says.

“RSF and its partners must stop doing anything that harms civilians, hinders humanitarian aid, or contributes to the perpetuation of atrocities and suffering.” Combatants must fulfill their obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilians and ensure that those seeking protection can do so without fear or hindrance.

The US is joining observers and international organizations such as the United Nations in reporting what is happening in Sudan, where RSF has been fighting the army of the country from April 2023. An argument it has killed thousands of people and displaced millions from their homes, creating an enormous humanitarian crisis.

Civilians have been exposed to a lot of violence and have suffered greatly as a result of this war,” the State Department said on Monday. “The United States is calling on warfighters to facilitate safe, prompt, and effective access to civilians, fulfill their obligations to protect civilians, and take immediate action to prevent further atrocities.”
