North Olympic bid: Current and former British Olympians and Paralympians support the Games bid

In their statement, the athletes praised England’s response to a “world-class venue”, claiming it could build on the legacy of London 2012.

“The International Olympic Committee and International Paralympic Association’s multi-city model makes a distributed Games more viable than ever,” they wrote.

“A ‘Great North’ Games would be a national Games. It would bring the country together in common purpose. It would showcase the best of Great Britain.

“We believe that hosting a Games in the North of England in 2040 will be a moment of renewal and confidence for the whole of the UK. We are proud to add our voice to this vision and support a Northern Games that will inspire generations to come.”

Former gymnast Beth Tweedle, and ex-athletes Sir Brendan Foster, Steve Cram and Alison Curbishley are among the other signatories.

In February, A group of northern political leaders called on the government Claiming there was a “compelling” case, to ensure that future Olympic bids would be based in the region.

London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan has criticized the government’s plans for England’s potential northern bid, saying the exclusion of the capital city would be “a missed opportunity”.
