Starmer resigned and Burnham was sworn in as an MP


Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has stepped down as Labor leader and Andy Burnham has been sworn in as the MP for Makersfield.

Speaking outside Number 10 this morning, Starmer thanked his wife in an emotional speech after describing being prime minister as the “proudest moment” of his life.

Starmer said he had spoken to the king and if there was a contest to replace him, there would be a new Labor leader before parliament returns in September.

Andy Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, who traveled from Manchester to London to take the oath of office today as a Member of Parliament, has confirmed that he will stand in place of the Prime Minister.
