An exciting start to the match
Argentina star Lionel Messi missed the opportunity to become the all-time leading scorer of the World Cup alone during the match against Austria in the second round of the World Cup group stage on Monday night.
In the 7th minute, Argentina won a penalty for Lautaro Martinez, after Egyptian referee Amin Omar went back to the video technology.
Messi stepped up to make it happen, but he shot weakly wide in uncharacteristic fashion for the big star.
Messi is tied with Germany’s Miroslav Klose for 16th place as the all-time leading goalscorer at the World Cup, and a goal would see him take the throne alone.
