Ukraine says it hit a power plant in western Russia | Story

Ukraine has said the installation is a “critical element” in defense development as Russian authorities confirm the attack.

The Ukrainian military said it had struck a missile manufacturing plant in Russia’s Voronezh region, as well as a satellite communications center in Dubna, Moscow region.

In a statement on Telegram on Monday, Ukraine’s General Staff said it had used anti-aircraft missiles to hit a plant in Voronezh, which it called “a very important element” of Russia’s defense infrastructure.

Alexander Gusev, the governor of Voronezh, said the manufacturing plant was damaged and three people were injured in the attack, without specifying the type of plant.

Gusev said in a post on Telegram that the air defense forces destroyed several high-speed flights in the air in Voronezh and warned people about the danger of missiles.

The Ukrainian military said it had also hit a satellite communications center in Dubna, Moscow region, adding that heavy smoke was seen at the site and extensive damage was done.

Eighty-four drones bound for Moscow have crashed in the past 24 hours, the city’s Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on the Telegraph.

He said emergency aid had been sent to the areas where the drones were shot down, but did not give details.

Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo airports, as well as Zhukovskiy near the Russian capital, have temporarily suspended flights, the airport manager said separately.

In total, Russian defense systems downed 301 drones overnight, local media reported, citing the Defense Ministry. This figure included the Russian-controlled areas of Ukraine.

The latest attack follows a drone attacks which hit Moscow’s only oil refinery last week, one of the biggest attacks on the city since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.

In Ukraine, authorities say a Russian air strike early Monday in the Sumy region killed a 13-year-old boy, his 36-year-old father, and his 73-year-old grandfather.

Regional Governor Oleh Hryhorov said the 73-year-old woman is the mother of his friend.

Russian airstrikes in the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia overnight and early Monday killed two people and wounded seven others, Ukrainian emergency services said.

Russia also hit the region south of Odesa with an Iskander missile on Sunday evening, killing one and injuring three, regional governor Oleh Kiper said on the Telegraph. Vehicles and fuel tanks were set on fire after their strike at the farm, he said.

Elsewhere, the Russian city of Sevastopol in Crimea suspended all public events on Monday and will turn off street lights, its governor, Mikhail Razvozhayev, said as he called on people to stay off the grid.

Russian drones hit a Turkish cruise ship, the Victress, which was sailing under the flag of Panama, the Ukrainian military said.

Deputy Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba said a 58-year-old Egyptian cook was killed and eight others, including Turkish and Indian nationals, had to be evacuated by lifeboat.

The leaders of Europe’s major military groups will meet on Wednesday in Berlin to discuss the conflict in Ukraine and the upcoming NATO summit.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz plans to host the leaders of France, Britain, Italy and Poland, a spokesman said on Monday, adding that the announcement of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s resignation did not change those plans.
