The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has said that Tennessee will redo its electoral map following a decision by the US Supreme Court that invalidated a large part of the election. US Voting Rights Act.
While the Supreme Court control on the electoral map of Louisiana has significant implications for the rest of the country, affecting the outcome of the election.
It removes some restrictions on the types of district maps that can be drawn, and has given Republicans a chance to regain control of several states ahead of November’s midterm elections.
Change comes in the midst of the unprecedented interrupting the flow which began last year with US President Donald Trump forcing Texas to redraw its congressional maps to favor Republicans. Both parties sought redistricting seats in seven states – including Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, California, Utah, and Virginia.
Recently, the Florida legislature on Wednesday proposed a new congressional map, creating 24 districts expected to go to the Republicans, from the 20 held by members of the party.
In a post on his Truth Social account on Thursday, Mr Trump said he had spoken with the Republican Governor of Tennessee, Bill Lee, “where he said he would work to correct the errors in the Congressional Maps of the Great State of Tennessee”.
Lee did not immediately confirm his claims.
A new map in Tennessee is expected to bring another strong Republican district to the state, increasing Republicans’ chances of winning control of the US House of Representatives in November.
The Supreme Court’s third ruling involved Section 2 of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which has long been cited as a way to prevent state officials and lawmakers from undermining the voting power of racial minorities in drawing congressional districts.
The ruling upheld the map as illegal under the law, requiring the plaintiffs to prove that there was a bias behind the state’s drawing.
It saw Louisiana’s recent map, which includes two Black counties, unconstitutional, and is expected to endanger other Black communities across the country. Black voters have tended to lean heavily Democratic.
On Thursday, Louisiana’s governor announced that the state would delay its general election as it plans to redraw its map, which is expected to create another Republican-controlled district.
After Louisiana and Tennessee, Georgia’s Republican governor said he would reconsider whether his state would need to redraw its map before the midterms.
The Supreme Court’s decision could see many other states pursue bans, including Indiana, Kentucky, Kansas, Mississippi, and South Carolina, although, for various reasons, they may not opt to do so during election season.
Re-registration is done once every ten years following the US census to account for changes in the population. This process has been going on for a long time, with governments favoring one party over the other.
In most cases, legislatures and the executive branch oversee the anti-segregation process, while a few countries rely on independent commissions to do so.
But critics say the recent anti-split campaign has created confusion, as both parties hope to change the math on their behalf in the middle vote.
Political analysts generally favor the Democrats to take back the US House within approval limits of the Trump administration, but the margin is expected to be tight, with fewer seats making up the difference.
