Team Ten: Egypt join the train of African World Cup winners

The Egyptian national team wrote a new chapter in its football history, winning its first victory in the World Cup finals since its first appearance in 1934, defeating New Zealand (3-1) in its fourth World Cup appearance.

The Pharaohs managed to break the goal barrier that has always plagued them by scoring three goals in a game for the first time in international competition, recalling memories of their opening match against Hungary 92 years ago when they scored twice despite losing 4-2.

With the achievement, Egypt became the tenth African team to win the World Cup, joining a group that includes Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Cameroon, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire.

Mohamed Salah continued his exceptional form to take his tally to 5 goals in just 4 games at the 2018 and 2026 World Cups (3 goals and 2 assists), ensuring the Pharaohs have won 22 of the 24 games their star has played since 2 September with goals1.

However, defensive gaps remained the only weak point as Egypt conceded a goal in eight of their nine World Cup matches, apart from a lone goal against Ireland at the 1990 World Cup.
