Salah could be a superstar at Liverpool. It is also on a higher plane in Egypt.
With every touch came loud cheers from his country’s fans, putting a huge strain on his shoulders in all appearances.
Sunday’s goal, his country’s 68th in 118 games, left him just one shy of coach Hasan’s all-time goalscoring record and some say it was crucial in Egypt’s 92-year wait to finally win the World Cup.
Former Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou told ITV: “If there was any doubt about Mo’s influence on this team, you can still see it.
“It gives them a lot of confidence. They’ve had to deal with adversity and having their big player step up and give them a lot of confidence. You need your big players to perform to improve.”
Former Jamaican winger Joby McAnuff added: “Mo Salah stood up for his country just when he was needed.
Salah has played in the senior national team for 14 years and his importance to Egypt is known to involve high government officials when he is injured.
“I got a phone call from the Egyptian health minister,” recalled national team doctor Dr. Mohamed Aboud, after Salah suffered a serious shoulder injury in Liverpool’s 2018 Champions League final loss to Real Madrid, which could rule him out of the World Cup in Russia a few weeks later.
However, despite helping Liverpool win the Premier League title in 2019-20 and 2024-25, the player has yet to win a trophy for his country.
The generation before Salah won three African Cups in a row between 2006 and 2010. Since then, they have suffered two defeats in the 2017 edition in Cameroon and the 2021 edition in Senegal.
This World Cup victory will banish at least one of Egypt’s spirits.
