A positive 2-2 draw settled a thrilling encounter between Uruguay and Cape Verde in the second round of Group H of the 2026 World Cup at the Hard Rock Stadium today, Monday.
The 21st minute marked a historic moment for the African nation after Kevin Lenini scored Cape Verde’s first ever World Cup goal to give his side the lead and immortalize his name in the tournament’s annals.
Uruguay managed to equalize before the end of the first half when Ronald Araujo scored the equalizer in the 44th minute, capitalizing on a through ball after a powerful header from one of his teammates.
In the dying minutes of the first half, especially in the sixth minute, Agustin Canobio was able to score the second goal for Uruguay after a perfect pass from Araujo’s header, so that the Celeste team ended the first half 2-1.
In the second half, the Cape Verdean team returned to the atmosphere of the match again, after Helio Varela, taking advantage of a blunder by one of the Uruguayan defenders, mistakenly passed the ball in the 61st minute, and Varela successfully scored it into the goal.
Uruguay almost restored their lead in the 68th minute through Maximiliano Araujo, but the match referee disallowed the goal for offside using the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technique.
The two teams are in Group Eight of the 2026 World Cup, along with Spain and Saudi Arabia.
Spain recorded a big 4-0 win over their Saudi counterparts in the same round to move them to four points at the top of the group, after starting their campaign with a goalless draw against Cape Verde.
With this result, the Uruguay team increased its score by two points to the second place, surpassing the Cape Verde team, which is in the third place with the same score.
While the Saudi Arabian national team occupies the fourth and last place with one point, so all possibilities remain valid until the final stage of the group competition.
