England v New Zealand Player Ratings: Matt Henry stands head and shoulders above tough Test for Jacob Bethell and James Reeve

Ben Dockett – 4

Looked in good touch with a fluent 36 off 25 balls before being barbecued by his opening partner during a first-innings run-out. He gave away his wicket cheaply while chasing.

Emilio Gay – 5

England’s top scorer – showed his fighting qualities with an incredible first-innings half-century and deserved a run in the team.

Jacob Bethel – 3

The 22-year-old batsman produced nine and not out after hitting sixes and 14 runs at Lord’s, indicating a clear rustiness to the longer format given his lack of red-ball cricket. Claimed some easy wickets with the ball, but questions remain over his ability to bat at number three.

Joe Root – 6

He scored 77 in the second innings to become only the second player to reach 14,000 Test runs and England had faint hopes when he was at the crease. However, it was a largely ill-fated return to captaincy.

Harry Brooke – 5

A scintillating half-century in the second innings delighted the crowd on Saturday, but this was the one occasion England needed to score a big century against the odds.

James Rew – 3

Abhishek looked a little out of his depth. There were some flashes of promise with the bat when he scored 24 and 15, but missed opportunities with the gloves, reflecting that his wicketkeeping still needs to be polished.

Jordan Cox – 4

The spirit of Test cricket was largely there, although his scores of 27 and 25 did not set the world alight.

Jofra Archer – 7

England’s best player. Bowled some ferocious quick spells that unsettled the New Zealand batsmen and made England believe they could wrestle their way back into the match. More than five wickets deserved.

Matthew Fisher – 6

Nothing less than 100% gave. Made a determined half-century in a tail-end rescue act to keep England in the game and stuck to a plan to build pressure with the ball at crunch time.

Josh Tongue – 5

A player regarded as England’s strike bowler had his moments but failed to make the impact he would have liked in the competition.

Sonny Baker – 5

Modest returns on debut but there were signs he has the pace, skill and character to cut the international stage at some point down the line.
