Ryan Garner achieved a childhood dream with a dominant victory over Michael Magnessy in an action-packed bout to claim the WBC interim super-featherweight title in his hometown of Southampton.
The 28-year-old was aggressive in the early stages at the St Mary’s Stadium and came out on top in several brutal close-quarter exchanges.
After 12 rounds of action, all three judges scored the fight in favor of ‘The Piranha’ – 116-112, 118-110 and 119-109.
In retaining the interim belt, Garner is now the number one contender to fight O’Shakey Foster who holds the entire WBC title in the division.
“If it wasn’t for the football club, Saints fans and Frank Warren, none of this would have happened,” Garner told DAZN after the fight.
“It was hard work tonight, (Magnesi) doesn’t stop, he’s an absolute machine and I had to dig deep there at times.
“I can’t thank everyone enough for supporting me today, it wouldn’t be possible without this amazing support.
“I want the next biggest and best fight, I want to make as much money as possible for my family, but I’m very grateful to be fighting here – look at this crowd and the atmosphere, the place in Southampton.”
Garner entered the ring to a chorus of the Seven Nations Army of the White Stripes inside St. Mary’s, with more than 10,000 supporters roaring his way.
When his name was announced before the bout, Garner put a stern look on his face, shadow boxing, before raising his arms to greet the St. Mary’s faithful.
Garner was on the front foot through the first round, applying early pressure by pushing Italy’s Magnesi.
The contest was fought at a high pace – both men happy to trade shots at close quarters.
