Undav became the first German to score in the first two World Cup games since Miroslav Klose in 2002 against the Ivorians.
That’s illustrious company – but even taking part in the World Cup at one stage was a distant dream for Undav, who was rejected by Werder Bremen at the age of 14.
By the age of 17, he was a semi-professional in Germany’s fourth tier, earning £120 a week while balancing his football career with eight-hour shifts in a factory.
“When I was 14, Werder broke my heart when they told me that I had no future with them because I was too young,” Undav said in an interview with Belgium’s 7sur7.
But I haven’t given up hope. At 17, I left my family home to sign for Havelse in Germany’s fourth division, playing and training full-time eight hours a day working laser machines in a factory.
“I got up at 4am, went to the factory, then went to training and got home at 8am… before doing this the next day.
“I had to do that job to live for the money because I couldn’t live on the money I got from football alone.”

But after scoring just five goals in 22 Premier League games in the 2022-23 season, he was loaned out to Stuttgart, who signed him permanently in 2024.
Undav netted 19 Bundesliga goals in 2025-26 – second only to Harry Kane – to claim the World Cup.
