Spain will return to Atlanta on Sunday, hoping to make a move pull off an amazing goal and the debutants of Cape Verde responded with a very good performance against Saudi Arabia.
Pre-tournament favorites are no longer the bookies’ top choice to promote the title in North America, and questions have been raised about their lack of concern.
Europe’s reigning champions – who have one of the world’s most exciting players in Lamine Yamal – face a strong Saudi Arabia team, who saw off Uruguay’s victory. 1-1 draw in their opening.
After a poor attack against Cape Verde, where Spain failed to score despite having 27 shots, the 2010 champions need a good finish.
Their former star, Yamal, is usually in the goal or assist category, but his minutes at the 2026 World Cup have been limited as he recovers from an abdominal injury.
The 18-year-old was named on the bench and only came on for 71 minutes. Spain needs to recover from the World Cup, many thought that Yamal would return to the starting line-up, but he did it will not be like that right now.
“I’m fine, I feel good, but soon, it’s not important; I’m settling down – it wasn’t the right time to play all the games – but I can play as many minutes as the manager wants,” Yamal told Spain’s TVE on Friday.
“I want to be on the pitch; at the end of the day, even if you know you can’t play for 90 minutes, you always want to go out and help the team.”
This new golden generation of Yamal, Pedri, Ferran Torres and others hope to inspire Spain to their second World Cup title, following 16 consecutive exits in recent editions.

Although Spain’s confidence may be low after the first game, the mood in the Saudi camp is positive.
Their 1-1 draw with former champions Uruguay was a “motivational boost”, said coach Georgios Donis, who took over the team just two months before the World Cup.
Despite his limited time with the team, Saudi Arabia’s Donis did well to leave with points, staying alive in the hunt for points.
After the unexpected result against Cape Verde, Spain will not take Saudi Arabia lightly. After all, the Saudis started big amazing in the opening round of the 2022 World Cup, defeating eventual champions Argentina.
The Asian giants, who appeared in North America for the seventh time, registered their best results in 1994 and ran into the 16th tournament.
Opta’s supercomputer provider Stats has given Spain an 86.7% chance of winning against Saudi Arabia, who have a 4.3% chance of winning. There is a 9 percent chance of a draw.
Initially, Spain were the favorites to win the World Cup, but after a goalless opening match, they dropped to fourth in Opta’s prediction list, while France is the favorite (15.43 percent).
Now, Spain has a 12.04 percent chance of winning the tournament.

Spain, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay and Cape Verde are in Group H.
They all have one point, Uruguay are at the top because they are the highest in the group. Saudi Arabia is second, Spain is third, and Cape Verde is at the bottom.
Both have an equal chance of still going to the knee, leaving the group open.
The top two teams from all 12 groups – along with the eight best third-placed teams – advance to the next stage, the round of 32, which was introduced at the World Cup for the first time.

Spain has a better record than Saudi Arabia in the last five matches.
Spain drew 0-0 with Cape Verde in their first World Cup match, then beat Peru 3-1 and drew 1-1 with Iraq in June’s friendly. They also drew 0-0 with Egypt and beat Serbia 3-0 in March.
Saudi Arabia held Uruguay 1-1 in the opening game of the tournament, played goalless against Senegal and beat Puerto Rico 3-0 in June’s friendly. They lost to Ecuador 2-1 in a friendly in May and lost 2-1 to Serbia in a friendly in March.

They have met three times, Spain winning each time. Their last meeting took place in September 2012 when Spain defeated Saudi Arabia 5-0.
Sunday’s match will be only the second time that Spain and Saudi Arabia will meet at the World Cup – their first meeting, in the 2006 edition, ended in a 1-0 victory for Spain.
