Tottenham Hotspur have made an improved offer for Brighton centre-back Luka Vuskovic.
The latest package is worth a total of £45m with add-ons.
Sky Sports News The Croatia international is understood to be keen on a move to the south coast.
Vuskovic spent last season on loan at Bundesliga club Hamburg and is currently at the World Cup with Croatia, where they lost 4-2 to England on Wednesday.
Earlier this week, Spurs completed a £52 million deal for Brighton defender Jan Paul van Heek.
The Netherlands international defender had one year left on his contract at Brighton and played at the Seagulls under Roberto De Jarby between 2023 and 2024.
The 26-year-old made a substantial profit from Brighton signing him from NAC Breda for £1.8m in 2020. It is understood the Seagulls have also negotiated a 20 per cent sell-on clause.
Van Hecke is Tottenham’s third signing in the de Zerby era after Marco Censi and Andy Robertson joined on free transfers.
Spurs move Vuskovic further down by adding Van Hecke and Seneca to their ranks, with Christian Romero and Micky van de Ven still at the north London club.
Sky Sports News’ Michael Bridges:
Vuskovic, who established himself as one of Europe’s best young defenders on loan at Hamburg, now wants to be a regular starter but is not interested in another temporary move.
His chances of becoming a first-team regular at Spurs next season now look slim, with Van Hecke joining Sennecy as a new signing this summer. With Van de Ven and Romero, Voskovic would effectively be Spurs’ fifth choice.
Romero’s future is uncertain, just as it was before he signed a new contract last summer, but it remains to be seen if there are any clubs that will pay enough to convince Spurs to sell him.
There is a real feeling at Spurs that Vuskovic could become one of the best defenders in the world but he is not quite ready to make the move to become a regular starter in the Premier League.
Arsenal’s situation has parallels with William Saliba. The France international had three loan spells in Ligue 1 before fully integrating into the first-team picture and becoming one of the best defenders in the Premier League.
Spurs have big spending plans this summer and naturally, that will lead to player sales. However, in an ideal world, they would raise funds elsewhere for players who are not part of de Zerbi’s future plans.
Croatia boss Zlatko Dalic said it was important for Vuskovic to find a club where he would play regularly. Spurs agreed but could only offer a loan. Brighton can give the teenager what he wants but are reluctant to pay extra. This situation can escalate.
Barcelona are among a number of clubs monitoring Van de Ven’s situation at Tottenham.
Van de Ven, who is also interested in the Premier League, has held initial talks with Spurs over a contract extension but no agreement has yet been reached.
The Netherlands international has an option to extend his contract with Spurs by a further 12 months with two years remaining.
Spurs want him to stay long-term, and de Zerbi has described him as the best left-sided central defender in the Premier League.
