Scotland manager Steve Clarke has expressed his “extreme disappointment” at the refereeing decisions that cost his side valuable points in their 1-0 World Cup defeat to Morocco, criticizing the failure to send off Morocco’s Issa Diop after tripping Che Adams in the first half.
“I was disappointed by Diop’s foul on Adams, who was the last defender on the pitch. Che Adams, in my opinion, was in ideal position to be left alone with the goal. Such decisions can be made another day.”
“After the game everyone was talking about Scott McTominay, while I thought John McGinn’s mistake was very questionable. Che Adams was the last defender on the field and he had a chance to challenge the goalkeeper, but the referee chose to show a yellow card.
Clarke criticized his side’s slow start as Scotland conceded the winner after just 69 seconds when Brahim Diaz broke through the defense with a long pass and striker Ismael Saibari, who recently moved to Bayern Munich, fired home.
“I wish we could start over, that was my first thought,” Clark said. “We conceded a bad goal. we tried to compensate and let the attackers go early in the match. They showed energy and creativity.”
Regarding the next match against Brazil in Miami on June 24, Clarke said: “We have to let the players suffer for the next 48 hours because they don’t like to lose. We will rest and recover and then return to the competition. meetings don’t get easier.”
Despite the defeat, Clarke expressed his admiration for the Moroccan team, expecting them to progress to the advanced stages of the tournament, saying:
Notably, Scotland are still in with a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages of the World Cup, but may need a positive result against Brazil to secure qualification in what will be one of their toughest tests in the group stage.
