Super League: Hull KR 22-8 Leigh Leopards – Robins claim victory

Leigh lost Super League record try-scorer Josh Charnley and stand-off Lachlan Lam to knee injuries and badly missed their attacking prowess and impact.

They fell behind 10 minutes later when Burgess tapped into the left corner after good approach play from the home side.

Hiku quickly added to the lead through Tyrone May’s clever kick.

Alick-Wienke showed good effort to get the ball down the line to bring Leigh back into the game.

As the first 40 finished in mildly chaotic fashion, Mikey Lewis had a drop-goal attempt just off the post in the dying moments of the half.

Burgess was forced just after the restart after a tackle by Aaron Payne but the home side scored on their next attack after a clever kick from Lewis was passed inside to Whitbread.

The visitors would be hugely disappointed with their defense for Leyland’s try as he picked up the ball from dummy half and managed to ground the ball despite the attention of three defenders.

Hodgson reduced the deficit with 10 minutes remaining but there was no chance of a late fightback and Rhys Martin’s late penalty completed the goal for the hosts.

The Robins now travel to Super League Leeds next Friday, June 26, looking to avenge their massive 58-6 defeat to the Rhinos in Las Vegas in March. Leigh went to Toulouse the next day.
