What did the former coach of “Manchester United” say?
Former Manchester United manager Erik Ten Haag has made some remarkable comments about Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo in his first long-term interview with the Portugal captain since the famous crisis that ended the player’s career at the English club a few years ago.
Ronaldo is having a tough time at the 2026 World Cup, having come under widespread criticism following Portugal’s 1-1 draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo in the first round, as questions grow over his ability to lead his country’s national team at this stage of his career.
During his appearance in the analytical studio of the Channel “NOS:In the Netherlands, Ten Haag confirmed that he is watching Ronaldo’s performance at the World Cup with interest, but he admitted that the age factor is starting to take its toll on the Portuguese star.
The Dutch coach said. “I consider the analyzes that have been said about him to be very logical. At a certain stage, and that’s normal, a player reaches a point where he can’t continue at the same level he’s used to.”
“I am interested to know if Ronaldo is still able to make a difference in this tournament. I think the World Cup could give him a bigger opportunity compared to the Premier League or the Champions League because the format of the matches is less in terms of intensity and speed, so I can see he still has something to offer.”

Ten Haag also praised the current quality of Portugal’s national team, considering that the team has the potential to go far in the tournament.
He explained. “Portugal have a very good team and in my opinion they should be at least among the top four teams in the tournament.”
But he added: “The important question remains. Can it be achieved with Ronaldo in this position? These are the real challenges of the national team at present.”
Ten Haag also addressed his relationship with Ronaldo after leaving Manchester United, stressing that communication between them had completely stopped since the player left the club.
“I haven’t spoken to Ronaldo since I left Manchester United. After all, when you are a coach, the interest of the team always comes before the interests of any player, regardless of his name, and there were issues at the time that no longer corresponded to the interests of the group.

The Dutch coach also denied some of the stories circulating about Ronaldo in the dressing room, stressing that the Portugal captain does not interfere in the details of his teammates’ lives and does not monitor their food, as was previously rumored.
He explained. “He did not watch other players’ dishes and did not interfere in such matters. He always focused on the matches and preparing for them as best as possible.”
Ten Heg’s comments reopen the file on the strained relationship that brought the two sides together during their time at Manchester United, a crisis that culminated in Ronaldo’s departure from the English club before he continued his career in Saudi Arabia and Portugal.
